Jackson County Municipal Courts

The Municipal Courts in Jackson County almost exclusively handle city ordinance violations, and not questions of civil money damages, such as those you would pursue in a personal injury claim. However, if you were injured in an auto accident, whereas the other driver’s negligence is considered a crime by the city, the court’s recordkeeping systems supports a flow of information from police as well as traffic citations.

Furthermore, many of the municipal courts in Jackson County handle building code and nuisance violations (such as insufficient property management) and Animal health and public safety violations (no animal license, animal attacks, etc.). Thus, as proof of negligence can come in the form of a police citation, your personal injury claim might begin at the respective municipal court in Jackson County.

Personal Injury Claims Against Missouri Government

If you have an injury claim against the government, in which the cause of injury was related to the negligence of a government agency or employee, your case will involve a different set of regulations. In Missouri, all personal injury claims against the government, including workers compensation for state employees, must be filed at the Office of Administration’s Risk Management Division. Carla Ahrens is the current Risk Manager, contactable at (573) 751-4044 or by email at Risk@oa.mo.gov.
